Abstract
Summary: Basic assumptions of Snyder's self-monitoring theory are questioned: We especially criticize that persons scoring high on both authenticity and self-presentational ability are neglected in this approach. In a questionnaire study (N = 329) we explored the relation between self-monitoring and authenticity. In doing so we abandoned the unidimensionality of self-monitoring in favour of the distinction between acquisitive and protective self-presentation. Accordingly, we used German adaptations of the Revised-Self-Monitoring-Scale (acquisitive self-presentation) and the Concern-for-Appropriateness-Scale (protective self-presentation). Snyder's Self-Monitoring-Scale (German version) and an authenticity scale constructed by the authors were also administered. The results show that only protective self-presentation is negatively related to authenticity. Acquisitive self-presentation, however, is positively correlated with authenticity. Cluster analyses suggest that Snyder's model is valid for certain people whereas others are better classified as acquisitive and protective self-presenters. Altogether, our results indicate that acquisitive self-monitors intend to convey “authentic” images of their personalities.
