Abstract
Abstract: The subjective burden was examined among elderly wives (N = 33) during their husbands' stay in a geriatric rehabilitation center. For this purpose, self-rating scales measuring physical complaints, anxiety and depression were administered. In a self-developed questionnaire demographical variables, physical health, availability of social support and cognitive involvement with the patients' illness were determined. The objective burden was assessed by means of the patients' functional status and cognitive abilities. The results revealed a high amount of subjective burden in all self-rating scales: 73 % of the wives showed an increased amount of physical complaints, 64 % presented a high level of anxiety, and 52 % exhibited depressive symptoms. Nevertheless, only 42 % were interested in participating in a support group for caregivers. In accordance with other publications, this study provides further support for the destructive effect of a stroke on the caregivers. Also, this calls for intensified clinical practice with caregivers, which should be tailored to the needs of the target group.
