Abstract
Abstract. Private self-consciousness has been considered a risk factor for the development and maintenance of mental disorders. However, the maladaptive aspects of self-consciousness are not marked by its intensity and frequency alone, but also by the inflexibility of the state of self-awareness. Instruments capable of tapping this aspect are lacking. Therefore, we developed a “dysfunctional self consciousness” scale and examined its reliability and validity using several healthy and clinical samples. Findings were mostly satisfactory. In order to operationalize self-regulative aspects of self-consciousness, we proposed a second scale named “functional self consciousness.” Its reliability and validity are also reported. In sum, the “Questionnaire of Dysfunctional and Functional Self-Consciousness” (DFS) is a new and economic (22-item) instrument. It shows substantial correlations with measures of well-being and symptom severitys and also proved useful for measuring clinical change. We recommend its application for research in the fields of clinical and health psychology.
