Abstract
Abstract. Today, overweight and obesity are endemic in western societies. Since treatment of obesity has very limited success rates, obesity prevention is necessary. The aim of the Kiel Obesity Prevention Study (KOPS) is to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity in children and adolescents. In KOPS biological, socioeconomic, nutritional and behavioral factors were/are assessed in around 800 children between 1996 and 2001 using the annual medical school entrance examination. In addition intervention and health promotion is taught in 3 schools for all children and their teachers (nutrition education and active school breaks) together with a behaviorally, oriented approach in families with obese and preobese children. For obese children a sportprogram is offered. All children were reinvestigated at 10 and 14 years. First results from KOPS show, that obesity prevention is possible.
