Instruments for the assessment of abuse and neglect risks

Abstract. Structured and empirical founded instruments for the assessment of abuse and neglect risks can help to qualify youth care. Several instruments are used to demonstrate three risk assessment approaches. Some risk assessment checklists are aimed to organize relevant case information. Actuarial risk assessment offers an additional assessment of the risk status of a case. Psychodiagnostic instruments can provide additional relevant and standardized information. Within each approach some instruments have already demonstrated their validity. The possible use of risk assessment instruments in Germany is discussed.
