Abstract

Abstract. Three years ago, Greenwald, McGhee, and Schwartz (1998) presented a new method to measure differential evaluative association of two target concepts: the Implicit Association Test (IAT). It has been asserted that the IAT allows for the assessment of implicit attitudes by comparing response times in two combined discrimination tasks. Although the distribution and employment of this method has been quite successful, the processes underlying IAT-effects, as well as the psychometric properties of specific IAT-variants, have received relatively little attention up to now. The articles included in the present special issue especially focus on these aspects.

Zusammenfassung. Vor drei Jahren wurde von Greenwald, McGhee und Schwartz (1998) eine neue Methode zur Messung differentieller evaluativer Assoziationen von zwei Zielkategorien vorgestellt: der Implicit Association Test (IAT). Es wurde behauptet, daß der IAT es ermöglicht, durch den Vergleich von Reaktionszeiten in zwei Doppeldiskriminationsaufgaben implizite Einstellungen zu erfassen. Obwohl die Einführung und Verbreitung dieser Methode außerordentlich erfolgreich war, wurde den Prozessen, die IAT-Effekten zu Grunde liegen, genauso wie den psychometrischen Qualitäten spezifischer IAT-Varianten, bis jetzt vergleichsweise wenig Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die in diesem Themenheft versammelten Artikel fokussieren im Besonderen auf diese Aspekte.
