RMSEA. .052).

Development and validation of the Inventory for Functional Assessment of Self-Injurious Behavior (IfES) for persons with intellectual disability

Abstract. The Inventory for Functional Assessment of Self-Injurious Behavior (IfES) is the first German instrument specifically designed to assess the functions and conditions that trigger the self-injurious behavior in people with intellectual disabilities. The aim of the present contribution is to describe the development and psychometric properties. The investigation was accomplished in a representative sample (n = 452) in facilities for people with disabilities. Among other methods, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used. The model fit for the 5 factor structure with 24 items was satisfying (e.g., RMSEA .052). The psychometric properties exhibit fair to good internal constistency (Cronbach’s a), ranging from .57 to .83 for the subscales. Interrater reliability of the subscales (n = 125) ranged from .61 to .84 and test-retest reliability (n = 135) ranged from .74 to 90. Finally, convergent validity could be demonstrated with an american scale. The practical suitability of the new instrument as well as its psychometric quality is discussed.
