Psychosocial problem areas in depressed adolescent girls

Major depression is a frequent disorder in adolescents. Psychosocial problems may lead to depression. Problems also may be a consequence of the disorder, and may promote its further maintenance. The present investigation aims to describe problem areas in adolescents with major depression. Fifty-seven girls fulfilling DSM IV criteria for major depression were compared to 60 nondepressed subjects in eight problem areas, assessed by a standardized and validated questionnaire. Depressed girls had significantly higher scores on all but one problem scales, in particular in the areas covering school, self efficacy, and health
