Abstract
Abstract. Background: A big part of information from environment we receive by the visual system. Apart from visual acuity the contrast sensitivity plays an important role. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of alcohol and nicotine consumption on the contrast sensitivity. Subjects and methods: We recruited 17 patients who are addicted to alcohol (43.3 ± 12.52 years old), 25 smokers (33.4 ± 10.77 years old) and nine ex-smokers (34.4 ± 14.25 years old). They were compared with healthy controls in a matched-pair-design (patient – control). The contrast sensitivity was measured by the VISTECH-panel at frequencies of 1.5, 3, 6, 12, and 18 cpd. Results: The contrast sensitivity was generally reduced in alcoholics and at 3 and 18 cpd, too. Under control of pack-year-index the contrast sensitivity of smokers was reduced at frequencies of 3, 12, and 18 cpd. Conclusion: Alcoholics and smokers showed reduced contrast sensitivity. Because of the importance of this visual function in traffic, the contrast sensitivity should be proved in these subjects. With regard to driving license enactment it is important to check the contrast sensitivity in abstinent alcoholics, too.
