Abstract
The present study examines the role of teachers’ goal orientations for the use of three learning opportunities in the teaching profession (reading of professional journals, participation in school-internal training courses, and participation in school-external training courses). Further, it is examined how the pursuit of competence enhancement in the domains of pedagogical, subject-matter content and pedagogical-content knowledge (domain-specific learning goal orientations) predicts the percentage of these topics within voluntarily attended training courses. Based on path analyses with 667 teachers, learning goal orientation and performance approach goal orientation proved to be positive predictors of journal-reading and the participation in school-external trainings. Work avoidance negatively predicted journal-reading and performance avoidance goal orientation negatively predicted participation in school-external trainings. It was also found that teachers primarily attend such training topics that meet their domain-specific learning goal orientations. The results are discussed with regard to self-regulated learning in the teaching profession.
