Abstract
Abstract. Learning strategies are important prerequisites for self-regulated learning. Explicit knowledge of strategies as well as of their situation and task-appropriate use is required to increase knowledge and skills. Strategy knowledge usually develops in interaction with specific tasks and learning requirements and is therefore domain specific. To investigate the development of strategy knowledge in English for students from Grades 5 to 7, we constructed a domain-specific test, which was validated by expert ratings. Results from a pilot study with 398 students (Grades 5 and 6) indicated sufficient psychometric properties and support the content validity of the developed test. In a longitudinal study, with four measurement occasions from Grades 5 to 7 (N = 835), the stability of the assessed construct was analyzed and evidence for factorial validity was gained. Cross-lagged analysis between strategy knowledge and performance indicated the predictive value of this knowledge domain and confirmed its relevance for performance.
