Zusammenfassung. Akademische Selbstkonzepte gelten als wichtige Einflussgrößen leistungsthematischen Verhaltens. Im Bereich der Pädagogischen Psychologie ist ihre Genese insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit dem Bezugsrahmenmodell (Internal/External frame of reference model; kurz: I/E-Modell, Marsh, 1986) diskutiert worden. Das Modell postuliert im Kern positive Auswirkungen von Schulleistungen auf das akademische Selbstkonzept im selben Fach als Folge sozialer oder externaler (E) Vergleiche und negative Auswirkungen dieser Fachleistungen auf das akademische Selbstkonzept in einem anderen Fach als Folge dimensionaler oder internaler (I) Vergleiche. Der Überblick über die bisherige Forschung weist die Gültigkeit des I/E-Modells mit einer Vielzahl von quer- und längsschnittlichen Studien in verschiedenen Altersgruppen, Ländern und Schulsystemen nach. Experimentelle Studien untermauern die Annahmen zu den Auswirkungen dimensionaler Vergleiche.


On the development of academic self-concepts: The impact of social and dimensional comparisons

Abstract. Academic self-concepts are important determinants of achievement-related behavior. In the domain of Educational Psychology, self-concept development is explained by the internal/external frame of reference model (I/E model, Marsh, 1986). The model interprets positive effects of academic achievement in a domain on the corresponding self-concept as consequences of social or external (E) comparisons and negative effects of academic achievement in a domain on the self-concept in a different domain as a result of dimensional or internal (I) comparison processes. The present review demonstrates the validity and generalizability of the I/E model across research designs (cross-sectional and longitudinal), age groups, countries, and school systems. In addition, experimental studies provide direct evidence about meachanisms mediating dimensional comparisons.
