Abstract
Abstract. This study aimed to investigate the influence of reduced secondary school duration on the stress of learners. The participants (n = 69) comprised cohorts of secondary school learners exposed to a lower (G8) and regular (G9) number of years in school in Germany, who attended final examinations together. Participants’ stress profiles were measured on the basis of salivary cortisol and perceived stress levels in everyday school life. Long-term stress was considered for the period before and during the examination by analyzing cortisol concentration in the hair. Our results showed that the cortisol concentration of the two groups was comparable throughout the school day. However, female G8 learners tended to have a slightly higher cortisol concentration. The two groups had similar levels of perceived stress. Furthermore, in both groups cortisol concentration in the hair increased significantly between the pre-examination and examination period. These findings indicate that the examination period is a long-term stressor.
