Abstract
Abstract. Group discussions on managing optimization tasks are not only used to explore solutions in enterprises, they often present opportunities for moaning. A lag sequential analysis of 59 real group discussions in industrial enterprises, which were analyzed using the Cassel Competence Grid (CCG), demonstrates that moaning facilitates further moaning statements and inhibits the expression of solutions. However, when solutions are proposed these are followed by further discussion of solutions and not by moaning. If support is expressed either moaning or solution cycles can arise. To interrupt moaning, the results point to the importance of structuring statements. The results are discussed against the background of the collective construction of work group mood and of interpersonal theories. Practical implications of the results are shown.
