Epidemiology of mental disorders in children and adolescents. A critical review

Abstract. In this review, selected topics and international findings from epidemiological research on mental disorders in children and adolescents are presented and discussed. In particular prevalence estimates are reviewed, which show substantial variation due to inconsistencies in methods. Major population-based studies often found total rates ranging from 10 % to 20 %. Mental health service utilization of children and adolescents with mental disorders is generally low. Prevalence estimates are strongly influenced by the criteria used for case definition, such as the consideration of functional impairment or the combining of reports made by different informants. In the future more consistent research strategies are needed.
