Abstract
This article examines the impact of child-care quality on the language and social-emotional development of two-year old children taking into account differences between children with and without migration background. The data come from N = 929 two-year olds of the national study of child-care in early childhood (NUBBEK), n = 255 of these children with Turkish or Russian migration background. The following groups of children were compared: children who were mainly in family care (amount of center-based child-care < 10 hours per week, n = 395), as well as three groups of children who were in center-based child care more than 15 hours per week, here we differentiated between low (n = 178), medium (n = 175) and high (n = 181) quality of child-care (based on the German Version of the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale, ECERS-R). Adjusting for family characteristics (mother's education, SES, quality of mother-child relationship), there was a significant interaction effect of child-care quality and migration background. For children with a background of migration, child-care quality proved to be more strongly related to development than for children without a background of migration. Regarding language development (receptive vocabulary skills, PPVT), children with migration background benefit only from high-quality child-care, whereas there were no differences between children experiencing low or medium quality of child-care compared to children in family care. Regarding social-emotional development (ITSEA), children with migration background experiencing low- or medium child-care quality showed the lowest scores compared to all other groups. Regarding problem behavior (CBCL), no significant effects could be found. The results provide further support for the importance of child-care quality for the language and social-emotional development of children with migration background.
