Summary: The traditional intelligence component “processing capacity” predicts complex problem-solving. We investigate whether a component of perceived emotional intelligence, namely, repair of negative emotions, can increase prediction. N = 92 students (67 women, 25 men, Mdn = 21 years) were investigated with a 2 × 3 quasi-experimental design. In groups of low or high repair participants, negative, neutral, or positive emotions were induced. During complex problem-solving indicators of problem-solving behavior, achievement, and feeling states were assessed. Processing capacity served as a covariate. Results revealed that high repair participants with negative emotions showed less conducive problem-solving behavior and yielded inferior results than low repair participants. But high repair participants reported generally better feeling states. Processing capacity gained no significance. Finally, the capacity hypothesis is discussed, the relationship between subjective and objective components of intelligence and the conception of “new” intelligences is questioned.
