Abstract
Summary: Individuals differ in the extent to which they define their self as autonomous and independent of the social context or as social and interrelated with the context. While the consequences of self-construal on cognitive variables have been extensively studied, possible implications for motivation processes have only rarely been investigated. In three studies, we tested differences in motivational and volitional tendencies, depending on the person's self-construal being independent (independents) or interdependent (interdependents). We expected both the contents of motives that are most important and the way in which intentions are put into action to differ between the two self-construal groups. As expected, compared to interdependents, independents (1) exhibited a stronger achievement motive, (2) showed a weaker affiliation motive, and (3) were less motivated by the anticipation of failure avoidance (studies 2 and 3, contents of motives. In addition, interdependents were more state oriented while putting intentions into action (study 1, way of putting intentions into action).
