Abstract
Abstract. Three misconceptions (dogmas) about learning and instruction in schools and universities, which frequently arise in public as well as academic discussions, are outlined. The constructivism-and-activity dogma relates to distinguishing learning arrangements that afford either passive learning or constructive and active learning. The dogma of good instruction refers to the assumption that it is possible to specify one best type of instruction. The dogma of structural reforms is manifested by a focus of measures to enhance educational quality through structural school or university reforms instead of through the classroom processes of learning and instruction. The relevance of pointing out these dogmas is underlined by discussing four topics related to higher education: Lectures as outdated form of instruction? Problem-based learning as superior learning method in higher education? Evaluation of university courses by students? Reforming teacher education for better school instruction?
