Abstract
Abstract. This experimental study compared the assumptions of two developmental models on achievement motivation during preschool age. Following the developmental model of Stipek, achievement motivated actions should be internalized already in preschool age in a way that pride and shame as their indicators can be observed already independently of the presence and social evaluation of esteemed others. Following the model of Holodynski, the presence of esteemed others as personified representations of standards is still required to elicit achievement motivated actions in preschool children. Nineteen boys and 19 girls aged 42-81 months worked on puzzle tasks in the presence of an adult (social condition) and alone (solitary condition). Additionally, their achievement-related experiences had been varied in an earlier social condition (high-esteem/success-oriented vs. neutral/failure-oriented adult behavior). Results showed that the children exhibited pride or shame - this means achievement motivated actions - only in the social conditions. In these conditions, they also were far more persistent and tolerated more failures than in the solitary condition. This finding correlated positively with prior experiences of perceived esteem.
