Correlations Between Self-Reported Resilience, Perceived Social Support and Well-Being Among Members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade

Abstract. Social support and a pronounced resilience are discussed in the research literature as protective for the psychological well-being of emergency services. This study presented here aims to investigate resilience and its relation to psychological well-being in the specific group of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (VF). In a study with several measurement dates (November 2016–May 2018, T1: N = 475, T2: N = 117, T3: N = 58), VF were asked to fill in self-rating questionnaires. Small to medium correlations of resilience with psychological well-being were found (r = .20-.65). Social support showed small correlations with well-being (r = .14, r = .23). There was an indirect correlation between perceived social support and psychological well-being, mediated by resilience. Further research should clarify whether, and if so how, resilience can be trained for this occupational group, and whether improvements in well-being are concomitant.
