Abstract
Abstract. The Lateral Preference Inventory (LPI, Coren, 1993) is a questionnaire designed to measure lateral preference on the four dimensions of handedness, footedness, eyedness, and earedness. This pilot study examined the construct validity of the German version on the item level (the item homogeneity). The LPI was given to 540 participants (303 male, 237 female) aged 17 to 37 years (M = 22.1, SD = 2.7). An ordinal mixed-Rasch model and a latent class model were applied to test the lateral preference dimensions with inferential statistics. Results showed that it was necessary to eliminate the response category "either" before a satisfactory construct validity could be obtained on the item level. Each of the lateral preference dimensions revealed a two-class solution classifying participants as either right-handers or mixed-handers. Recommendations for improving the LPI are discussed.
