Abstract
Abstract. Although accredited as a theoretically influential predictor of ecological behavior, environmental knowledge is generally neglected as a methodological issue. Our research aims at developing a performance test of environmental knowledge based on the multidimensional random coefficients multinomial logit (MRCML) model by Adams, Wilson, and Wang (1997). Our sample consisted of 783 students and 44 lecturers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zürich, Switzerland. Unexpectedly, the 61 knowledge items turned out to be rather unidimensional, and the presumed three-dimensional structure - differentiating environmental system-related, action-related, and effectiveness knowledge - was falsified. At the same time, the newly developed unidimensional environmental knowledge measure’s scale qualities can be seen as reasonable. Moreover, the relationship between environmental knowledge and ecological behavior (employing a compound measure based on 65 different behaviors) was in the expected range (r = .43).
