Abstract
Abstract. Parent-child conflicts have been discussed as a risk factor for the development of delinquency but also as a factor that may promote positive development (e.g. learning social abilities). This contradiction can be solved by considering other aspects of family relations that may influence the effect of parent-child conflicts: We hypothesized that high levels of parent-child conflict will be associated with an increase in delinquency if the level of general positive family interactions is low. In the case of high levels of positive family interactions, we expected no relationship between conflict and delinquency. Our data are drawn from a longitudinal sample of 10-13 year old children and their parents. We found that higher levels of parent-child conflict were associated with a larger increase in delinquency. In concordance with our hypothesis, high levels of joint spare-time activity buffered the effect of high conflict intensity on delinquency. Conclusions for intervention are discussed.
