Abstract
In weiteren Entwicklungsaspekten (u.a.
Abstract. We investigated whether parents’ descriptions of the development of their gifted children differed from descriptions provided by parents of children with average intelligence. Previous research on characteristics of the development of the gifted has often relied on single case studies, occasional observations and/or selective samples. In most cases no adequate comparison group was included. Within the scope of the “Marburg Giftedness Project“, parents of gifted elementary school children ( = 135, n = 151) and parents of elementary school children of average intelligence ( = 102, n = 136) judged different aspects of their children’s development. Both groups were derived from an unbiased group of N = 7023 students. Free descriptions as well as standardized ratings were analysed; parents gave retrospective as well as concurrent assessments. Substantial effects, all favoring gifted children, could only be observed in standardized ratings concerning the intellectual and verbal development. Regarding other developmental areas (e.g., personality-, social-emotional-, physical development), both groups turned out to be very similar. In general, parents did not report specific developmental characteristics of the gifted. There is a considerable overlap between gifted and non-gifted children, even in parents’ assessment of their intellectual and verbal development.
