Körperbildstörungen bei Trauma und sozialer Ängstlichkeit

Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1024/1661-4747/a000221

Body image in humans with trauma or social anxiety

Many psychological disorders may impact the perception of the own body. Individuals suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and social anxiety (SA) report negative body images. The modulating effect of trauma type and gender on body image is unknown in individuals with PTSD. With regard to SA, it is unknown which body image components are affected. Symptoms of PTSD, SA and self-rated body image were assessed in two online studies (N = 259). In the PTSD group, the body image is affected by symptom severity, but not trauma type or gender. Individuals high in SA reported negative attitudes regarding their body and pronounced body avoidance. Individuals high in PTSD symptoms reported more pronounced negative attitudes as individuals in the high SA symptom group. Psychic symptomatology like in PTSD or SA negatively affects body image. Accordingly, a focus on body related modules in psychotherapy would be pertinent.
