Abstract
The Discussion Coding System (DCS) is a new and user-friendly instrument to code interaction processes in organizations in an economical manner. DCS allows one to observe and analyze larger samples of groups and communication situations (e. g., decision-making conferences, team meetings, or appraisal interviews) in a chronological act-by-act order. With DCS, two distinct communication levels are coded simultaneously: the functional and the interpersonal meaning of an act. The reliability and validity of DCS were investigated by observing 60 supervisor-subordinate dyads during an interactive assessment-center task. High interrater agreements were identified (kappa values and unadjusted intraclass correlations ≥ .80). Correlations between DCS variables and personality as well as intelligence scales provide evidence for the validity of DCS. Furthermore, differences in the subjects behavior resulting from subliminal priming and the supervisor vs. subordinate role assignment were observed with DCS in the manner as predicted beforehand.
