Abstract
Previous studies have repeatedly shown that people defining themselves independent provide higher self-esteem ratings than people who predominantly define themselves interdependent. We argue that these findings do not necessarily mirror actual differences in self-esteem: (1) Conventional self-esteem scales address independent self-aspects only. Therefore, in study 1 we introduce the Social-Autonomous Self-Esteem Scale (SAS), which includes both an independent and an interdependent subscale. (2) People with independent and interdependent self-construals are prone to different motives of self-presentation. Therefore, in study 2 we used both the SAS and an unbiased implicit measurement of self-esteem. Implicit self-esteem correlated with the SAS independent subscale in independent participants but with the interdependent subscale in interdependent participants.
