Abstract
Summary: This study (N = 126 students) examined the importance of dispositions of action control (i.e., action-oriented versus state-oriented modes of control) in moderating the extent to which personal-goal commitments depend on (a) the perceived attainability of goals and (b) the congruence between selected goals and a person's motives and needs. Within the domains of agency and communion, self-report measures were used to assess personal goals, whereas motives were assessed with a Thematic Apperception Test. Consistent across both striving areas, the following results were obtained: For action-oriented participants, the strength of goal commitment was positively related to both the perceived attainability of goals and the congruence between goals and motives. In contrast, for state-oriented participants, the intensity of personal-goal commitments turned out to be independent of both the attainability and the need-congruence of goals. Results are discussed in terms of the role interindividual differences in action control play in personal-goal setting.
