Evaluation of a German Scale for the Assessment of Leader-Member Exchange

Summary: The Leader-Member-Exchange approach refers to the quality of the exchange relationships between subordinates and their leader. The focus is on the individual relationship between a superior and each follower. The 7-item-scale (LMX7) by Graen and Uhl-Bien (1995) for the assessment of Leader-Member-Exchange was translated and examined in a German version. To this end, two studies were conducted. In both studies the one-dimensionality and internal consistency of the instrument was tested. In both studies, the instrument turned out to be one-dimensional. The internal consistency (Cronbach's α) was α = .92 (study 1) and α = .89 (study 2). Since high correlations between Leader-Member Exchange and satisfaction with the superior emerged in earlier American and Dutch studies, the (possible) restriction of construct validity was tested in the German version, too. The studies showed high correlations between the constructs. However, in a factor analysis, the constructs could be differentiated.
