Abstract
The study was designed for assessment of the effects of the stress hormones corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and cortisol released by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPAA) on attention. Eighteen male individuals received 100 µg CRH (i. v.,) in two sessions. In one of the two sessions subjects were pre-treated by 1.5 mg dexamethasone (DEX; p. o.) to suppress the release of ACTH and cortisol induced by CRH. In a third session placebo was the only treatment. Attention was assessed repeatedly during the sessions by means of a single-choice reaction time paradigm. Visual analog scales were used for assessment of mood changes. CRH did not lead to significant changes of the reaction time and of the number of hits both in the conditions with and without pre-treatment by DEX. No systematic mood changes were observed. The negative findings regarding attentional changes after the infusion or the release of stress hormones in this study corroborate those of earlier studies by use of a relatively high dosage of CRH. However, it is premature to conclude that an activation of the HPAA under stress does definitely not influence attentional processes because there are a few reports of positive findings for ACTH and cortisol.
