Abstract
Abstract. In the two standardization studies, 218 personality traits were evaluated by 501 students for age stereotype typicality (“the elderly/senior citizen”) and normative beliefs about aging (i.e., desirability, controllability, onset and closing age). The standardization study 1 enabled a classification of the words into three character-sets with 30 typical traits each (stereotype-consistent, stereotype-inconsistent, and stereotype-neutral). With the standardization study 2, the sets were complemented by analyses of normative beliefs about aging. The study revealed a reduced (although still moderate) desirability and controllability for age-consistent traits. Furthermore, onset and closing age of the three character-sets differed clearly. Finally, comparisons of the present data with equivalent words norms from Heckhausen, Dixon and Baltes (1989) revealed temporal stability of normative beliefs about aging of young adolescents, especially for age-consistent traits.
