Qualitative Forschung mit dem „Concept of Candidacy“
Erschwerte Inanspruchnahme suchtpräventiver Angebote besser verstehen
Abstract
Abstract. Abstract Objective: The aim of this article is to demonstrate the usefulness of the concept of candidacy in qualitative research, when confronted with the scientific and practical problem of unequal access to, and utilisation of, addiction prevention services by vulnerable groups. Methods: The explanatory power of existing models and quantitative research approaches are analysed with regard to unequal access of socio-economically deprived families to addiction prevention services. The scientific potential of the concept of candidacy is exemplified with existing qualitative studies. Conclusions: Quantitative oriented models identify factors and their (multifactorial) influences on health behaviour. However, these models are rather static. They don’t sufficiently explain how hindered usage of addiction prevention services takes place in a process and in interaction between users and professionals. The concept of candidacy, applied within the framework of qualitative social research, can close this specific scientific knowledge gap. It can inform the formulation of research questions, be used as sensitising concept in grounded theory studies and as analytical heuristic that guides data collection and data analysis. Therefore, access to, and utilisation of, addiction prevention services by vulnerable groups such as socio-economically deprived families could be improved.
