Abstract
Abstract: In the context of academic teaching and learning different materials and media can be used. Widespread is the application of videos involving the advantages of a vivid depiction. However, in case of more complex theoretical input including deep-processing and transfer of knowledge, other tools for improving vividness such as the use of metaphors might be more expedient. We conducted two studies aiming to investigate the effects of different materials during the teaching of declarative subject matter (factual and conceptual knowledge) on student motivation and learning results (recognition and transfer of knowledge). In Study I (N = 62), comparable contents were explained by means of a video and a print version. The video was experienced as more vivid. However, no differences in motivation and learning success were found between learning with videos and learning with texts. Study II (N = 81) included two different text formats (text with metaphor and textbook content) that differed significantly in their perceived vividness. After having read the text including a metaphor, the students were more interested in a following task, estimated the probability of success regarding the task as higher, and expected the task as less challenging than after having studied the textbook content. Moreover, the participants showed better deep-processing performance (transfer of knowledge) for the text including a metaphor. In addition, mediating influences for the vividness of the text format on motivation were found.
