Abstract
Abstract. Intentional forgetting has usually been studied within the blocked-cueing procedure of the “directed forgetting” paradigm, where subjects are given either a “forget” or a “remember” cue halfway through an unrelated free-recall list. After presentation of the whole list subjects are asked to recall all items. Intentional forgetting (the directed forgetting effect) is demonstrated if, in the forget cue condition more items of the second as compared to the first half of the list are recalled (1st criterion) and if the difference between the recall of the items of the second half and the first half of the list is more pronounced in the forget condition as compared to the remember condition (2nd criterion). We investigated the impact of insight in the usefulness of forgetting and the learning incentive to grade 1, 2 and 5 pupils' directed forgetting. It revealed that although fifth graders do demonstrate the directed forgetting effect reliably, this effect was produced by younger children only when both the insight in to the reason and usefulness of forgetting and the learning incentive were provided.
