Abstract
Abstract. Goal theory is a useful framework for describing teachers’ work experience (Butler, 2007). Cross sectional analyses have confirmed relations between professional goal orientation, and professional stress and strain of teachers (Tönjes, Dickhäuser & Kröner, 2008). Based on a theoretical model, we analyse in two path analyses longitudinal effects from performance-approach goals, performance-avoidance goals, and learning goals on teachers’ feeling lack of accomplishment and emotional exhaustion. In the first study with N = 96 teachers, performance-avoidance goals have positive longitudinal effects on lack of accomplishment and emotional exhaustion; learning goals have negative longitudinal effects on emotional exhaustion; and performance-approach goals have marginal negative longitudinal effects on lack of accomplishment. In the second study with N = 80 teachers in training, performance-avoidance goals have positive and performance-approach goals negative longitudinal effects on lack of accomplishment and emotional exhaustion. The findings underline the relevance of goal theory for understanding the professional burden of teachers.
