Abstract
Abstract. Social support in close relationships received increased attention in the last decade. Several researchers proposed to separate this concept from social support from other persons. In the approach of dyadic coping, Bodenmann (1995, 2000 presented a concept that demonstrated its significance in the prediction of relationship quality and stability in several studies. Dyadic coping can be assessed by the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI). This questionnaire permits one to analyze partners’ perception of their own dyadic coping behavior (self-perception) and of their partner’s behavior (partner’s perception). The present study, involving a total of 443 couples, is based on the analyses of a differences perspective reflected in three discrepancy indexes (reciprocity, equity, congruence). Their relevance for relationship quality and well-being was examined. This genuine dyadic analysis that was rather neglected so far, yielded interesting findings. The results provide empirical evidence for the relevance of the discrepancy indexes and especially for the equity index related to relationship quality and well-being. However, women’s appraisals of dyadic coping were slightly more relevant than the men’s.
