Abstract
Abstract. The present study examines whether the well-proven link in adults between high anxiety and a weak sense of coherence also exists among children. The sense of coherence describes in how far an individual regards the world as comprehensible, handleable, and meaningful. Further, the study examines, on the basis of theoretical considerations and empirical data, whether the sense of coherence is related to selected strategies for coping with emotions. Anxiety and ways of coping with it were measured using self-assessment amongst the children as well as by judgments from their parents. The data were collected from 98 children in the 3rd and 4th grades. The results show a correlation between anxiety, ways of coping with anxiety, and the sense of coherence. Children with a high degree of anxiety experience a weaker sense of coherence than children with a low degree of anxiety. Evidence was found, moreover, that adaptive strategies for coping with emotions matched a developed sense of coherence.
