Published Online:https://doi.org/10.1026/0943-8149/a000025

The impact of a short exercise counseling program (MoVo-LISA) on physical activity, exercise and exercise-related determinants of behavioral change among individuals with overweight and obesity

Abstract. Physical inactivity is an important risk factor for obesity. Promoting physically active lifestyles, therefore, is an important public health issue. Existing intervention programs have mainly focused on motivational processes. Nevertheless, to facilitate successful coping with exercise barriers and possible relapses, programs targeting individuals with overweight and obesity should make attempts to strengthen volitional skills. To find out whether improving volitional skills increases physical activity, exercise, and exercise-related determinants of behavioral change, a short physical activity counseling program (MoVo-LISA) was implemented with N = 50 overweight and obese individuals. Data were collected from an experimental (n = 21) and a waiting-list control group (n = 29) three times during a 4-month period. The results show significant increases in exercise participation, outcome expectancies, intention to exercise, action planning, and coping planning. The findings provide evidence for the efficacy and the practical usefulness of the MoVo-Lisa exercise counseling program in a nonmedical setting.
