Abstract
Abstract. According to the Expectancy-Value Model (Eccles et al., 1983), achievement behavior is determined by self- and task-related beliefs, and the central determinants are the self-concept of abilities and domain-specific interest. The self-concept, in turn, is influenced primarily by prior performance. The present study tested relations derived from the Expectancy-Value Model for physical education as a school subject. It also examined whether there were sex differences in sport-related variables, and whether the same variables predicted an active interest in sports in both boys and girls. A questionnaire study of 1,443 students confirmed the postulated relations. Better grades led to a greater willingness to exert oneself in physical education, and this was mediated by a higher physical self-concept and a stronger interest in sports. The anticipated sex differences in favor of boys were found in all variables but not in the type of relations.
