Abstract
Abstract. The connotative meaning of words can be quantified statistically by the semantic differential technique where words are located on the dimensions “evaluation”, “potency”, and “activity”. In the present experiment, we investigated whether imagined odors can be consistently assessed by the semantic differential technique. Since the perception of odors is closely connected with emotions, we assumed that the factor “evaluation“ explains more variance here than when more concrete verbal stimuli are used. Thirty-one nouns associated with odors were rated by 138 adult subjects (129 females, 9 males). As expected, factor analysis on the questionnaire data yielded three semantic dimensions. The factor “evaluation” emerged as the most important, however, it did not explain more variance than with less emotion-lined words. In a hierarchical cluster analysis, groups of pleasant and unpleasant odors were classified in a meaningful way. The similarity of odors (as defined by origin or usage) is reflected by small distances in the semantic space.
