Abstract
Abstract. How are openness to experience, as one of the Big Five personality traits, artistic interests, as defined by the RIASEC model, and cultural activities related at the time of adolecents’ transition from school to university or into the labor market? What is the role of socioeconomic status? Based on models of self-selection and socialization, the present study examines these questions using repeated measurement data of N = 2,204 participants. At the first measurement point at the end of secondary education, social background, openness to experience, and artistic interests were related. In addition to high stabilities of the variables over time, an effect of openness at the first point of measurement on cultural activities at the second point of measurement was revealed when controlling for artistic interest and social background. The results highlight the importance of personality during transitional periods.
