Abstract
Abstract. This article is concerned with theories and assessment in exercise psychology. A predominant concern during the last decade has been the influence of the self on participation in sport and physical exercise and vice versa. Results and instruments for measuring self-concept and self-efficacy are presented. Although the measurement of transient states, namely moods and affects, has a relatively long research tradition, it is still a controversial issue in exercise psychology. The determinants of participation in sport and exercise, motivational theories and the associated measurements, one of the oldest topics of research, are discussed briefly. Prospects for future research in exercise psychology are drawn from a cross-cultural perspective.
