Motivationsentwicklung und schülerperzipiertes Lehrkraftverhalten im Mathematikunterricht
Abstract
Abstract: During the transition from elementary to middle school motivation in mathematics typically declines. This development relates to changes in classroom structures (stage-environment-fit theory). Recent American research suggests that classroom goal structures that focus on task-mastery (mastery structures) are associated with high motivation and performance, especially if students perception of the classroom is considered. In a one-year longitudinal study we examined changes in motivation (learning-goal orientation, self-efficacy, value) and perceived mastery classroom structures. Subjects were 618 German adolescents subsequent to the transition to middle school. We found a significant decline of motivation in mathematics associated with a decline of perceived mastery classroom structures. Hierarchical regression analyses (including sex and prior achievement as antecedent variables) revealed that perceived mastery structures were a significant predictor of motivation and performance even if previous motivation was included in the analyses. Path analyses reveal that the motivational decline is determined by changes in perceived teacher behavior. Implications for both future research and practice are discussed.
