Abstract
Abstract. Electronic communication media are often ascribed a general democratizing effect. In case studies conducted in the design departments of two companies, it could be shown that the use of electronic communication can be related to the degree of fit between regulation requirements inherent in a given form of task interdependence and regulation opportunities provided by the organization. A good fit was linked to a high degree of openness regarding the technical possibilities and to use patterns conforming to the social richness of the media, while a poor fit appeared to be connected to resistance against using the technology, especially founded on the fear of loosings informally acquired regulation opportunities. The case studies show that organizational conflict can be reflected in patterns of technology use or manifested through the technology.
