Abstract
Abstract. Background: The term memory and learning ability refers here in particular to memory performance as a central cognitive basic function of development. Disorders of this memory performance are expressed in a variety of learning and development problems and are not always correctly identified. After an overview of the basics of memory and working memory, central aspects of diagnostics and treatment with a focus on memory strategies are considered. Methods: A selective literature review with narrative additions was conducted. The overview is intended to expand established practical procedures with findings and trends in the current international research field and to discuss the effects of trainings. For this purpose, 66 peer-reviewed publications from the period 2013–2021 were first checked for suitability and then 31 studies were considered and assigned to categories. Discussion: Out of 31 included studies, 15 related to the basics and 16 to the effects of strategies and trainings. With a proportion of 13 studies, there was a clear research trend in favor of studies that focus on working memory. Following the study situation, the effects of working memory training and strategies were considered in particular. While working memory training mainly shows near transfer effects, there are indications of the benefit of a combination with memory strategies and metacognitive strategies. Everyday aids and parental trainings can also be given particular relevance.
