Efficacy of child and adolescent psychotherapy

Abstract. The article reviews methodological problems and empirical results regarding the efficacy of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Differences compared to psychotherapy in adults are described. Global meta-analyses establish the efficacy primarily of cognitive-behavioural interventions. They show that the effects of child and adolescent psychotherapy are similar to those of psychotherapy in adults. In the treatment of depression, phobias and anxiety disorders, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, conduct disorders and elimination disorders certain cognitive-behavioural interventions can be classified as empirically supported treatments. Based on this results guidelines for the treatment of disorders in childhood and adolescence have been developed.
