Abstract
Abstract. Whereas life-event research has primarily centered on the developmental and differential effects of life events, the present study focuses on influences in the opposite direction. Proceeding from an action-theoretical perspective on development, it is assumed that dispositional differences are expressed in preferences for particular environments and developmental niches. According to this theoretical perspective, differential factors should influence the probability of experiencing particular types of events. Observations on a sample of 938 participants in the age range of 28 to 62 years support this assumption. Logistic and multiple regression analyses hint that differential traits are predictive of particular types of biographical events. These relationships also emerge when personality traits are assessed prior to the event. Suggestions for future research as well as general theoretical implications are discussed.
