Abstract
Zusammenfassung. Ziel der Studie war es, freiwilliges soziales Engagement in funktionalem Zusammenhang mit der Bewältigung lebensphasenspezifischer Entwicklungsaufgaben zu betrachten. Hierfür wurden die Bereitschaft Jugendlicher zu einem einjährigen Freiwilligendienst im Ausland (FA) sowie die Motive für einen FA im Kontext der Identitätsentwicklung untersucht. Theoretisch wurde erwartet, dass die Bereitschaft zu einem FA in Abhängigkeit von der Identitätsentwicklung unterschiedlich ausfällt. Ferner wurde davon ausgegangen, dass sich die Bedeutsamkeit einzelner Motive für einen FA im Zuge der Identitätsentwicklung ändert. Um diese Annahmen zu prüfen, wurden 100 Jugendliche (M = 19.4 Jahre), die sich für einen FA beworben hatten, mittels eines neu entwickelten Fragebogens über ihre Motive befragt. Die Aussagen der Befragten wurden mit einer Vergleichsgruppe Gleichaltriger kontrastiert (n = 64). Empirisch ergab sich bei ausgeprägter Identitätssuche eine erhöhte Bereitschaft zu einem FA. Dabei waren in Abhängigkeit vom Identitätsstatus unterschiedliche Motive für einen FA bedeutsam. Im Ganzen weist die Untersuchung auf eine Lebenslaufcharakteristik “neuen sozialen Engagements“ hin, die es bei dessen genaueren Beschreibung und Erklärung zu berücksichtigen gilt.
Abstract. The aim of the study was to investigate the functional relations between volunteering and individuals’ coping with special developmental tasks. For this purpose, adolescents’ readiness and motives for joining a one-year volunteer program for charitable work abroad was analyzed in the context of identity development. Theoretically, it was expected that readiness for volunteering depends on the identity status of adolescents. Moreover, it was assumed that the significance of various motives for volunteering changes in the course of identity development. To test these assumptions, 100 adolescents (mean age 19.4 years) who had applied for the volunteer program completed a newly developed questionnaire assessing their motives for volunteering. Responses of volunteers were compared with a group of non volunteers of similar age (n = 64). Empirically, moratorium as an identity status was associated with greater readiness for volunteering. Also, adolescents’ motives for volunteering were correlated with identity statuses. In sum, the study points at life-course characteristics of civic engagement that need to be taken into account more thoroughly by future research.
