Abstract
Abstract. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a translation of the Self-Monitoring Scale (Snyder, 1974; Snyder & Gangestad, 1986) into German language. This questionnaire assesses an individual's self-observation and self-control guided by situational cues to social appropriateness. In an empirical study, a US-American sample completed the original Self-Monitoring Scale (N = 188) and a German sample completed the German version (N = 179). Additionally, the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire was administered in order to obtain an initial evaluation of the convergent validity of the German scale. The psychometric quality and measurement invariance of the translation were found to be highly satisfactory. The following subscales were identified: Other-directedness,Adopting roles and Extraversion. Compared to the German version by Kammer and Nowack (1983), the present adaptation possesses improved psychometric quality and can be used for different populations. In conclusion, recommendations for the use of the Self-Monitoring Scale in personnel assessment procedures are discussed.
